Fernando Mastrangelo

Fernando Mastrangelo is a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist best known for his sculptures, furniture and large-scale wall works by using typically commonplace materials such as salt, coffee, sand, glass and cement. Mastrangelo has always been inspired by his surroundings – the people, the places and the politics. His works are intriguingly contradictory; both rugged and refined, durable and delicate, formal and functional. Mastrangelo took a conceptual approach to rug making in the Reverence edition for Edward Fields, bringing the same spirit of consideration in each grain of materials in Mastrangelo’s sculptural works.

Reverence Edition
Fernando Mastrangelo │ Edward Fields

by Fernando Mastrangelo

Reverence is about a record of our times. The landscape inspired pieces crack, break, and flow to evoke a kind of realism that floats between abstraction and photography, watercolor and pastels. The palette of neutrals blends seamlessly into ombre colorations. Each fiber is meticulously planned and hand-sculpted by artisans at Edward Fields - from blended silk and wool yarns, to shag with low-pile contrasts, to surprising edging that - like nature - defies right angles. The collection brings the same spirit of consideration seen in each grain of material in Mastrangelo’s sculptural works.

Reverence Addition

Reverence Addition
Fernando Mastrangelo │ Edward Fields

by Fernando Mastrangelo

Reverence is a record of our times, an homage to the natural world. Like the landscapes from which it draws inspiration, the original Edition has evolved. Reverence Addition to the Edition presents four new pieces, each one thoughtfully inspired by changing topography. These additional rugs subtlety weave a global story of earthquakes,
forest fires, and warming water, creating beauty from destruction. Each fiber of these poetic constructions is meticulously hand-tufted with artistry and care. The Addition introduces felted wools, silk shags, and overtufting to create new textures and unique shapes. These novel compositions are a natural continuation of the successful collaboration between Edward Fields’ design directors Juliana Polastri, Ariana Massouh and celebrated artist and designer Fernando Mastrangelo.
